Short Story “Salon for Busy People”:
A three hour intensive study of two great short stories:
The Dead by James Joyce
Cathedral by Raymond Carver
Salon cost is 30 euros (includes critical materials); there will be a potluck brunch break.
Ahhh, the autumnal evenings, the brisk and damp air tasting of leaves and chestnuts, the night noise in the street streaming in the open window, the screaming of drunken obscenities at midnight…
Just to get you in the mood for a bit of Joyce and Raymond Carver. Both of these writers dig at the jagged edges and shards of our human experience…and come to some glimpse of the greater rhythms that give life pull and purpose. I can’t articulate what they do in a few glib sentences…nor do I want to summarize: this is the work of the Salon conversation and beautifully, it is the ensemble of ideas and opinions that opens up each of these gorgeous and hard works. Although I have listed two works, I will always choose depth rather than breadth of coverage; in other words: we may get to both or may find one story requires our full attention. Either way, you will have considered two rich works…
