Our Travel Studies – journeys to beautiful locations that contextualize literature – allow us to spend time with fellow readers in the real world. London Literary Salon retreats offer a more intensive immersion in the books than regular Salon Studies, at the same time opening the mind to places and experiences that are illuminated through the beauty of language and the companionship of like-minded people.
In 2026 we are again offering two studies on the Greek island of Agistri: Virgil’s Aeneid (30 April-7 May) and Homer’s Odyssey (9-16 May). In April there are opportunities to enjoy Virginia Woolf’s Flush & Freshwater and Between the Acts in East Sussex, and to visit the author’s beloved Cornwall to read To the Lighthouse and The Waves in St Ives. If the prospect of reading, walking and writing amidst the rugged charms of the Peak District appeals we have a five day study of Jane Eyre in June, and, although our August reading of Moby Dick on board a traditional sailing ship is sold out, we already have a waiting list for our 2027 voyage!

Some reflections from participants in past studies:
Moby Dick Afloat

“Moby Dick may feel peripheral when we are battling wind storming down on us from the mountains of the isle of Rum. But living on Eda in our cubbyhole bunks, eating Alice’s sumptuous meals as a crew (feasts she prepares in the tiny galley as we roll through swells) and learning seamanship illuminates the book brilliantly. Toby is inspiring . . . As a field trip this is genius.”
Horatio Clare, The Financial Times, 2 August 2025
The Odyssey on Agistri

“Discussing Homer whilst gazing out at the Aegean . . . . heaven!”
“It was a wonderful week – stimulating, informative, fun. You laid all the necessary foundations and the group dynamic supplied that extra magic that made the week so memorable.”
Virginia Woolf in St Ives

“The two facilitators were wonderful – knowledgeable and sensitive, understanding in depth not just the book but the group as a whole. The food, wine and games were also fantastic. We discussed the text at length and I believe everyone felt they had gained a good understanding of the book.”
