We can love poetry our whole lives without any knowledge of poetic forms, conventions or prosody. That’s part of its magic. But understanding a bit more about them — as most poets do — adds another layer of pleasure and appreciation to something we did not think we could possibly love more.
In response to requests for a standalone study on the Sonnet Form as a supplement to her five-meeting study of Poetic Form: Rhyme & Reason, Dr Nancy Goldstein is offering this single session focusing on James Merrill’s The Broken Home. In this epic seven-sonnet sequence, the poet’s formal skill and wit bring stability and order to the familial and cultural chaos his autobiographical poem recounts.
Nancy strongly recommends listening to this 1968 recording of Merrill reading The Broken Home.
