“Now there is a clear sense in which all reading whatever is an escape. It involves a temporary transference of the mind from our actual surroundings to things merely imagined or conceived. This happens when we read history or science no less than when we read fictions. All such escape is from the same thing; immediate, concrete actuality. The important question is what we escape to.”
C.S. Lewis, An Experiment in Criticism
Anyone escaping through the wardrobe into the world of Narnia will be rewarded with experiences and images that can never be forgotten. A lamppost glinting incongruously in a winter forest, a terrifying queen speeding through the frozen trees in her sledge, a faun hurrying home laden with parcels and an umbrella, and a family of intrepid talking beavers ushering us to safety.
The Queen’s curse ensures that in Narnia it is always winter but Christmas never comes. This year, in the run up to Christmas, Jane Wymark and Caroline Hammond will lead an exploration of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Join us over three sessions during which there will be lots of chances to read aloud as we rediscover this beloved work.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe begins with Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter being sent out of London to escape the Blitz. This year we are raising money for War Child, a charity which works with children displaced by war.
In order to make this study accessible for all we are not setting a fixed price but inviting donations to War Child. As a guide, this study consists of three two-hour sessions and we typically charge £25-£30 for each two-hour session.
